Building a new economy
Radical publishers Stir To Action have recently launched their New Economy programme, a year of workshops, residentials, mentoring, and live crowdfunding events. The programme will be delivered in Bristol, Oxford, and London from October 2018 to July 2019.
Co-operative & Community Finance is one of the sponsors and its members and borrowers are being offered a 20% discount off any workshop in the programme (£60 instead of £75). Topics include community ownership, worker co-ops, multi-stakeholder co-ops, crowdfunding, media training, tech for good, etc. The ambitious aim is to give people the skills, contacts and confidence needed to transform local economies.
Co-operative & Community Finance’s Business Development Manager Tim Coomer said: “We are delighted to support this programme. It is looking at things differently and brings together the diverse parts of the whole co-op and community sector.”
Stir To Action started in 2011. It publishes a quarterly magazine, STIR, and runs workshops and events to support community economic development. In July this year its office in Bridport, Dorset, was destroyed by fire. Although they ‘lost everything’ they were up and running in new premises in less than a month thanks to a successful crowdfunding appeal and much popular support.
